Primary finding

Probable cause

The pilot’s decision to continue the landing attempt with insufficient runway remaining, which resulted in a runway overrun and collision with a fence.

Investigator assessment

Analysis narrative

The pilot reported that he flew a higher approach to avoid terrain and powerlines at the approach end of the runway. The airplane landed further down the runway than the pilot anticipated, and he determined the safest course of action was to continue the landing. The airplane overran the runway and collided with an airport perimeter fence. The airplane sustained substantial damage to both wings. The pilot reported that there were no preaccident mechanical malfunctions or failures with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation.
