Primary finding

Probable cause

The pilot’s collision with a hole in the runway surface during the landing roll, which resulted in a nose over.

Investigator assessment

Analysis narrative

The pilot reported that during the landing roll on a grass strip, about halfway down the runway, the airplane’s nose landing gear struck a hole in the runway surface, which resulted in the airplane nosing over. The airplane came to rest inverted and sustained substantial damage to the vertical stabilizer and rudder. The pilot reported that there were no preaccident mechanical malfunctions or failures with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation.
